Concussion Management workshop
This course is primarily lecture. There is opportunity to ask questions and all participants receive access to assessment, educational and treatment resources to enable easy implementation of content into immediate clinical practice.
Concussion – incidence, recognition & Berlin 2017 Guidelines, diagnosis, baseline testing, SCAT tool, King Devick, imaging.
Early management of concussion, rest & how to get out of rest, neurometabolic cascade, return to sport and learning, return to learning, school accommodations.
Post Concussion Syndrome, ONF Guidelines, differential diagnosis, risk factors for persistent symptoms, strategies for symptom management: sleep, noise sensitivity, tinnitus, reading, screen intolerance, mindfulness, planning & pacing.
Assessment of Concussion: symptom surveys, cervical screening for headache & dizziness, balance, cognition, autonomic dysfunction post concussion & Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test and exercise prescription.
Review of the vision system, anatomy, visual processing, spatial vs focal vision, sensory integration, Vision action systems (oculomotor control, convergence, accommodation), Post Trauma Vision Syndrome, Visual Midline Shift Syndrome.
Vision & Vestibular assessment – VOMS review & practice, Cover test, visual midline shift test, dynamic visual acuity.
Treatment – incorporating concussion patients into private practice, education, multidisciplinary approach, early vs late management strategies, balance training.
Vestibular and visual treatment strategies, role of the optometrist, Binasal occlusion, vision therapy, body awareness & schema, habituation activities, VOR, strategies for oculomotor training and multisystem integration training.
Treatment – proprioceptive system, weighted compression vest, cognitive retraining, use of technology and apps, acupuncture.
Psychosocial changes after concussion, strategies for return to work,
