Concussion

  • ACRM mTBI Diagnostic Criteria, Amsterdam 2022 Sport Consensus Guidelines, SCAT6, Sport Concussion Office Assessment Tool (SCOAT)
  • Concussion, rest & how to get out of rest, neurometabolic cascade, return to sport and learning, return to learning, school accommodations.
  • Post Concussion Syndrome, ONF Guidelines, differential diagnosis, risk factors for persistent symptoms, strategies for symptom management: sleep, noise sensitivity, tinnitus, reading, screen intolerance, mindfulness, planning & pacing

Assessment of Concussion

  • Symptom surveys, cervical screening for headache & dizziness, balance, cognition, autonomic dysfunction post concussion & Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test and exercise prescription.
  • Review of the vision system, anatomy, visual processing, spatial vs focal vision, sensory integration, Vision action systems (oculomotor control, convergence, accommodation), Post Trauma Vision Syndrome, Visual Midline Shift Syndrome.

Vision & Vestibular assessment

  • Vestibular Ocular Motor Screen, Cover test, visual midline shift test, dynamic visual acuity.
  • Treatment – incorporating concussion patients into private practice, education, multidisciplinary approach, early vs late management strategies, balance training.
  • Vestibular and visual treatment strategies, role of the optometrist, Binasal occlusion, vision therapy, body awareness & schema, habituation activities, VOR, strategies for oculomotor training and multisystem integration training.

Treatment

  • Proprioceptive system, weighted compression vest, cognitive retraining, use of technology and apps, acupuncture.
